Preliminary Exercise

Ferdinand de Saussure was a linguist, semiotician and philosopher. He studied that the signifier could not exist without the signified. He believed that written or spoken language is the primary form of communication between humans. A signifier is a sign's physical form/object, whilst a signified gives the meaning exerted by the signifier. An example of this would be a cat; whilst the cat is the signified, the signifier would be Stealth, loneliness or even arrogance.

With this specific theory, I will study a simple movie named "The Hunger Games". This movie is a media production created by Universal Studios, the story follows Katniss Everdeen and her companion Peeta Mellark as they participate in a death-game called The Hunger Games against multiple other participants, which are mostly teenagers and/or adults. Children can also participate in the game as shown at the beginning of the movie, when Katniss's sister was chosen for the reaping (This is some sort of event where someone from a higher class nominates someone to participate in the death-game).
